"Yes! That's how it happened"
Agnes Huston (Jean Kent) fortune teller is murdered and Inspector Lodge (Duncan Macrae) tries to unravel the various stories he is told by those involed, including Dirk Bogarde.
Cleaverly pieced together, into a fine whodunnit.

the goose steps out (1942)

"Blimey it is my own."
A bumbling teacher, William Potts (Will Hay), is mistaken for a German spy. He is given the job of impersonating the spy, and is parachuted into German to cause mayhem.
Entertaining Propaganda film using comedy to undermine the enemy with laughter.

breakout from opression (1978)

aka Sha chu chong wei.
"You tried to kill him!"
On release from prison Fonda Chiu (Fonda Lynn) tries to start her life over, and gets a job at a newspaper, but then she starts to suspect that someone has a vendetta against her.
A violent horror-thriller.

the swinger (1966)

"I'm not a nudie, I'm a writer."
Kelly Olsson (Ann Margaret) is a writer who gets the knockback from Girl-lure magazine, so to prove that she is not as wholesome as they think, she writes a sex-novel. The publishers take the bait, so she then has to live out her heroine's adventures when in a rush of blood she tells the editor (Anthony Franciosa) that it is all true.
Promises more than it delivers, but the journey is full of kitschy fun along the way.

street corner (1953)

aka Both Sides of the Law.
"Oh dear, not another!"
Three stories that revolve around the work of policewomen. The first has a young newly wed (Peggy Cummins) with child, who takes up with a petty thug. The second tells of a young woman who deserts the army to marry, and is subsequently caught when she rescues a child from drowning. The third story features a mistreated baby, who is reunited with its mother.
An unassuming film that develops character rather than drama, from a an almost wholly female crew and perspective.

crucible of horror (1971)

aka The Corpse. The Velevet House.
"She does not need instructing Paul, she needs love."
Will the domineering patriarch (Michael Gough) finally get his comeupance when his wife (Yvonne Mitchell) and daughter Jane (Sharon Gurney) hatch a plot to murder him. And what about Rupert (Simon Gough), the son that worships the father?
More of a slow moving suburban melodrama than a horror.

"Well, I'll be damned."
A student visits a rual Texan village to study witchcraft, and gets more than he bargained for...
Cheap and not so cheerful...

pilgrimage (2017)

"It's been a long time since we've had visitors."
1209 AD and group of monks, including a religious novice (Tom Holland), journey across a riven Ireland to deliver a holy relic to Rome. Protecting it are a mute (Jon Bernthal), with a troubling back-story, and a Cistercian(Stanley Weber).
Beautifully shot, but with a script that fails to flesh out the characters we journey with.

derby day (1952)

"He wanted to touch me for a quid."
Ensemble piece that gathers the stories of a variety of people who are drawn to the Epsom Derby; from a couple on the run for murder, to a Canadian girl who is having the day of her life with a film star.
The great and the good of British actors come together in an entertaining film, that mixes pathos, romance and drama.

beyond the door (1974)

aka The Devil Within Her.
"I feel it is trying to suffacate me, trying to kill me."
Jessica Barrett (Juliet Mills) gets unexpectedly pregnant, and quickly her mental and physical health starts to suffer. Then Dimitri (Richard Johnson) shows up and starts to coach her through the pregnancy, but why is he so concerned that she give birth?
A film that suffers from inevitable comparisons with the then recently release The Exorcist.

snowbouond (1948)

"We must meet again."
Ex-Intelligence agent Engles (Robert Newton) recruits a team, (including Dennis Price, Stanley Holloway & Herbert Lom), to pretend they are making a film in the Italian Alps. But really they are on the hunt for hidden Nazi treasure.
As implausable as it sounds.

laser mission (1989)

aka Soldier of Fortune.
"I represent a number of concerned citizens in the United States."
Michael Gold (Brandon Lee) is a mercenary sent to Cuba to pursuade laser expert Prof. Braun (Ernest Borgnine) to come to the USA, but they instead end up in the hands of the KGB. Michael escapes, and vows to rescue the professor, but to do that he needs the help of the Professor's daughter (Debi Monahan), who he's told is a member of the KGB.
The bad acting, and action sequences are as plentiful as the cliques.

the forest (1982)

"There's something following us."
Two couples decide to head up into the hills for a bit of backpacking. Little do they know that they are heading straight for some woods where a cannibal hermit is living...
A horror that never seems to get to the horror.

the creeper (1977)

aka Rituals.
"It's like a minefield out there!"
Dr Harry (Hal Holbrook) goes on treking with four friends every year in the Canadian wilderness, but this time they soon realise they are being stalked and prevented from leaving...
Cheap but suspenseful horror.

lease of life (1954)

"I've nothing against the living."
A country vicar (Robert Donat) finds out he is dying, and this gives him cause to reconsider his life, and his advice to those he serves. Something that disturbs some of his parisoners and fellow men of God.
Heart-warming drama, that will never linger in the memory.

the vampire happening (1971)

aka Gebissen wird nur nachts - das Happening der Vampire.
"It's nice to be back amongst the living."
American actress Betty Williams (Pia Degermark) inherits a Transylvanian castle. What she does not know is that her vampiric ancestor, is still plaguing neighbourhood.
A curiousity that is neither comedy, or horror, but is wonderfully kitsch.

to dorothy a son (1954)

aka Cash on delivery.
"I love you Elmer, I mean Tony."
Tony Rapallo (John Gregson) and his wife Dorothy (Peggy Cummins) are making heavy weather of having a baby. Then to make things worse Tony's first wife Myrtle (Shelley Winters) arrives. She tries to tempt him back with news that she is about to inherit $2m from her uncle, but what she doesn't tell him is the inheritance is dependant on him not having any male heirs.
A comedy that wears quickly.

jet storm (1959)

aka jetstorm.
"Your time is up!"
Ernest Tilley (Richard Attenborough), tracks down the man who killed his daughter in a hit-and-run. Unfortunately his plan to enact his vengeance takes place on a trans-atlantic plane journey and the other passengers have their own opinion on the unfolding drama.
A packed plane, full with name actors, whose stories each unfold in this early disaster movie.

dancing with crime (1947)

"You're not going to get mixed up in this are you?"
Taxi driver Ted Peters (Richard Attenborough), finds his dodgy mate Dave (Bill Owen) dead in his cab, shot in a gang squable. With thoughts that Dave talked before his death, the gang decide to snuff Ted out. Can Ted get to the bottom of events before the gang manage to get to him?
British B-movie, with an uncredited Dirk Bogarde and Diana Dors to keep you watching.

the mind of mr soames (1970)

"What if he never wakes up?"
Thirty year old Mr Soames (Terence Stamp) has been in a coma since birth, but then Dr Bergan (Robert Vaughn) wakes him up, and plans to fast-track his education and development from child to man. Inevitably though things go wrong...
Intreging premise, that never quite sparks to life.

the ugly duckling (1959)

"Contain's that powerful new ingredient...gin."
The shy and awkward chemist Henry Jekyll (Bernard Breslaw) finds his great, great, grandfather's formula. A formula that transform's him into the suave Teddy Hyde, and as Teddy he soon gets involved with a gang of jewel thieves.
A comic updating of the Jekyll and Hyde story, that predates the Jerry Lewis comic take on the same story.

ravenous (2017)

aka Les affamés.
"I don't want to scare you, but if you ask me, there is something up on Route 8."
Bonin (Marc-André Grondin) and Tania (Monia Chokri) dodge zombies, whilst looking for other survivors in upstate Quebec.
Disturbing French-Canadian horror, as much for the lack of explaination.

under the shadow (2016)

"Did you sleep ok last night?"
Tehran during the Iran-Iraq war, and a mother and daughter (Narges Rashidi & Avin Manshadi) struggle from day to day, especially when missiles start to fall, and then the daughters doll goes missing and she blames an unknown evil...
Slow and suspencseful horror that rewards your patience.

errementari: the blacksmith and the devil (2017)

"A man so evil, so cruel, even the devil himself would fear him."
A small Basque village in the 19th C, is home of Usue (Uma Bracaglia), a young child who has lost her mother to suicide, and a hermit blacksmith (Kandido Uranga) with lots of secrets.
A retelling of the fable adds many twists to the tale of hell and redemption.

the flying scot (1957)

aka The Mailbag Robbery.
"Time. Time. We are all dominated by time."
When Ronnie (Lee Patterson) learns that the Flying Scotsman train is carrying withdrawn bank notes from Scotland to London, he quickly plans to relieve the government of this burden.
Engaging thriller, that explains the heist, before unveiling the reality.

miss robin hood (1952)

"Golly, here's the police."
Henry Wrigley (Richard Hearne) a teenage thriller writer, meets the eccentric Miss Honey (Margaret Rutherford). She soon involves him in her criminal venture, to steal back a secret recipe from a whiskey manufacturer (James Robertson Justice).
A curious amalgam of a film, seemingly pitched as a children's comedy.

the uncle

"Custard legs!"
The summer holidays start for 7 year old Gus (Robert Duncan), and with it endless days of playing out. The only downside, is the arrival of his cousin Tom (Christopher Ariss), which starts the other kids teasing him for being an uncle.
A charming boys eye view of childhood on a Plymouth estate in the mid 60's. Nothing much happens of note, other than to show you how carefree and unfettered children where then compared to modern childhood.

chase a crooked shadow (1958)

aka Sleep No More. The Prescott Affair.
"if you want to play games, lets play games."
Heiress Kimberley Prescott (Anne Baxter) has her world turned upside down when a man arrives stating he is her brother (Richard Todd). The brother she identified as dead a year earlier. In turmoil she calls the police, but the detective (Herbert Lom) declares all his papers are in order, and this man is her brother, but who is the man claiming to be Ward, and why has he turned up now?
Well executed mystery thriller with a twist.

the monkey's paw (1948)

"If you buy that, you will regret it..."
The Trelawne family, buy a monkey's paw from a passing as it is said to grant three wishes, but these wishes can come at a cost...
Slow to start, this tale based on the classic story, finally comes to life in the last twenty minutes.

bloody new year (1987)

aka Horror Hotel.
"What's going on, it's only July." Six shipwrecked teenagers stumble on an empty hotel decorated for A New Years party. Being cold and wet, they think little of it and set about drying off. Then a kindly maid arrives and announces that they will all be taken care of...
Disjointed and very cheap horror, that has very few chills to redeem it.

fiancee of dracula (2002)

aka La fiancée de Dracula.
"The time of the skull clock is upon us."
The Professor (Jacques Orth) and his assistant are trying to track down Dracula, and feel that following isabele (Cyrille Iste), may be able to lead them to her 'master'.
Lacks a coherent narrative, almost made up for with some startling imagery and atmospere. Almost!

belgica (2016)

"Welcome to your favourite place for depravity."
Brothers, Jo (Stef Aerts) & Frank (Tom Vermeir) are brought together to create a nightclub in a small Belgium town, but the demands it makes of them look to drive them apart...
The great exuberance of the parties are countered by the depression involved in the subsequent hangovers, all soundtracked by Soulwax.

iron wolf (2013)

"We all have a past."
A rock star decides to base his reformation rehearsals in an old Nazi labouratory, which unknown to him and his crew is still home to their last experiment, and they are soon being stalked by it...
Truely aweful Nazispoitation, with no redeeming features.
