the black rider (1954)

"What do you think about George's story?"
In a small seaside village they have a myth about a black knight who haunts a local castle. Then the black rider starts to appear again and cub reporter Jerry (Jimmy Hanley) decides there may be something in it...
Boys own adventure, that is partially played for laughs, which adds a breeziness to procedings.

predator (1987)

"The jungle it came alive and took him."
Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a crack mercenary, who is employed with his team to penetrate the South American jungle to retrieve some kidnapped diplomats. What he does not know is that his CIA employers are not telling him the whole truth, and he soon finds that instead of hunting, his team are the hunted, but by whom or what?
A taut thriller that spawned a sequel set in the urban jungle.

rising damp (1980)

"Hello boys."
New resident John (Christopher Strauli) is conned by landlord Rigsby (Leonard Rossiter) into sharing a room with Philip (Don Warrington). Philip would rather have a room of his own, which happens to be next door to Ms Jones (Frances de la Tour). She would also like Philip to have a room of his own, so she can get him to herself. Then enters Seymour (Denholm Elliott) on the scene, who is obviously only after one thing from Ms Jones, her money.
The usual British film comedy routine. Take one popular tv series, stretch it to 90 minutes and end up with something weaker and less funny.

arn - the knight templar (2007)

aka Arn - Tempelriddaren.
"Nothing can keep us apart."
Arn (Joakim Nätterqvist), a Swedish nobleman's son is sent to a monistry to be educated, and comes under the influence of a warrior monk. This leads to him becoming a Knight Templar when he is banished to the Holy Land, as penance for having a child out of wedlock. As he leaves he vows to the woman that he will return for her...but his return does not bring the peaceful retirement that he would like.
A Swedish epic, (the most expensive film ever produced in Sweden), is a romantic adventure, showing that with time and thought, such films can be made outside of the American film system. There's nothing particularly new here, but it entertains none the less.

let me in (2010)

"Do you want to hang out with me again tonight?"
A withdrawn young man Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee), befriends a new neighbour, Abby (Chloë Grace Moretz). She subsequently helps him come out of his shell and fight back against the bullies who plague his school days.
Remake of the disturbing love story Let The Right One In. In this the director stays true to the original concept, whilst jettisoning some of the originals sub-plots, and adding his own flavour. What we end up with is a strong film, only bettered by the original.

ichi the killer (2001)

aka Koroshiya 1
"weren't you going to rid the world of all bullies?"
A Yakuza boss is killed and a large amount of money disappears with his body. His Lieutenant, Kakihara (Tadanobu Asano), believes him to have been kidnapped and sets about trying to find him. But his overly violent methods only incur the wrath of the other yakuza bosses, and they expell the gang from the syndicate. Meanwhile the search leads them to the mysterious Ichi (Nao Ômori), a psychopathic killer controlled by a retired cop Jijii (Shinya Tsukamoto).
An inventive bit of cinema, based on a popular manga series, that is disturbing and gory. Don't expect to understand it, just go with the flow, and watch this almost surrealist tale of revenge and sadomasochism.
