the stars look down (1940)

"If these men drown in Scupper flats no one can accuse you of murder. You'll say you were not a party to it. But what will your conscience say?"
Davey (Michael Redgrave) is a miner, from a long line of miners, who gets a scholarship to university. He's determined to graduate in order to campaign for better mine working conditions. Unfortunately he gets sidetracked by gold digger Jenny (Margaret Lockwood), and ends up back in his pit village as a school teacher humiliated. But things come to a head when he learns that an unsafe seam may be being reopened by the unscrupulous mine owner...
A campaigning drama, full of vitriol, demanding the nationalisation of the coal mines. Its lack of sophistication in the script is more than made up for in the cinematography when in the mines themselves, with its grim realism, and unhappy ending.

the third alibi (1961)

Norman Martell (Laurence Payne) is a composer who is having an affair with his wife's step-sister Peggy Hill (Jane Griffiths). When Peggy announces she is pregnant, Norman asks his wife Helen (Patricia Dainton) for a divorce, but she refuses. So he hatches a plan to get rid of her, devising a complex alibi for himself and Peggy, but the best laid plans...
An intreging little film, with numerous plot twists to keep you on your toes. Keep an eye out for an uncredited Dudley Moore accompanying Cleo Laine, pre his decision to take up comedy.

master spy (1964)

"I'd say his only loyalty is to science."
Dr Turganev (Stephen Murray), a Russian scientist makes a claim for asylum whilst in Britain. He is keen to join Dr Pembury (Ernest Clark) and the British government let him as he is working on similar research. But is Turganev really a defector, or does he have other motives to joining Pembury?
A low budget is no hindrance to this cleaver little film, with plenty of plot twists and turns, and features June Thorburn as the lab assistant that Turganev does not want.

the wasp woman (1959)

aka Die Wespenfrau. La Donna vespa. Insect Woman. La Mujer avispa. La Mujer insecto. The Bee Girl.
Janice Starlin (Susan Cabot) owns a cosmetic factory and is concerned about dropping sales. To re-dress this she hires a scientist who is researching with wasp enzymes to makes animals younger and she becomes his human subject. But she soon starts noticing side effects.
Another Corman low budget quicky that never outstays its welcome and there's enough to keep you interested in the outcome.

every day's a holiday (1965)

aka Seaside Swingers. The Adventures Of Tim.
A seaside holiday camp is the setting for this standard boy meets girl musical from 1965. It moves along nicely but never really sparks. Better to view it as a nice bit of 60's nostalgia with Freddie and the Dreamers clowning it up as the catering staff.
