chase a crooked shadow (1958)

Heiress Kimberley Prescott (Anne Baxter) has her world turned upside down when a man arrives stating he is her brother (Richard Todd). The brother she identified as dead a year earlier. In turmoil she calls the police, but the detective (Herbert Lom) declares all his papers are in order, and this man is her brother, but who is the man claiming to be Ward, and why has he turned up now?
Well executed mystery thriller with a twist.

the naked edge (1961)

"I've made a killing."
George Radcliffe's (Gary Cooper) account of murder, and the theft of £60,000, leads to the conviction of fellow employee Donald Heath (Ray McAnally), despite some doubts including the fact the money was never found. Martha, Radcliffe's wife Martha (Deborah Kerr) then expresses concern as her husband starts investing money she never knew he had in property. Concerns that come back to haunt her when five years later, she sees a blackmail letter, which accuses him of the crime, and it sets her again wondering...where did his money come from, and could the man she loves be a murderer?
Gritty and shadowy cat and mouse drama, played well by its cast, building the tension and suspense towards the climatic finale.

millennium (1989)

Bill Smith (Kris Kristofferson) is a air crash investigator, who stumbles on a time traveling paradox called Louise (Cheryl Ladd), opening up a whole load of issues...
Hokum, that doesn't truly grab your attention.

shake hands with the devil (1959)

"Tis one of the boys."
Dublin: 1921. A city at war, with the IRA fighting the British forces for the fate of Ireland. Into this mix comes Irish-American medical student Kerry O'Shea (Don Murray), who tries to stay impartial, but is inexorably drawn into the Irish cause through the influence of firebrand teacher Sean Lenihan (James Cagney).
A fictionalised take on a crucial turning point in Irish history, and one that entertains as it informs.

dominique is dead (1980)

aka Dominique.
"What are you trying to do to me?"
Although a millionairess Dominique Ballard (Jean Simmons) is a troubled soul and taunted by her husband (Cliff Robertson) eventually commits suicide. From then on he starts to believe that she is haunting him in revenge.
An all-star cast cannot disguide the lack of entertainment in this deathly slow thriller.

night was our friend (1951)

"Why on earth did you wait for me?"
Sally Raynor (Elizabeth Sellars) is aquited of murdering her husband (Michael Gough), and we soon gather that she has only recently been reunited with him two years after his plane had gone missing in the the South American jungle. In the interviening years Sally, has fallen for another man (Ronald Howard), and Sally's husband has returned a changed man; psychologically damaged, and incapable of letting go of his demons, even considering suicide.
A promising start quickly decends into an over-talkie melodrama, when its revealed early on that his wife has bumped the hapless pilot off, ridding the film of any suspence at a stroke.

doc savage: the man of bronze (1975)

"Have no fear! Doc Savage is here!
It's the 1930's, and Doc (Ron Ely) and his five pals, try to find Doc's father who has disappeared whilst in the wilds of South America. Someone doesn't obviously doesn't want them there, as they are attacked by 'the green death'.
A campy and comic version of the pulp novel hero. This looks and feels like a spoof of a 30's Saturday matinee serial, but unfortunately doesn't quite pull it off. Five years later Spielburg covered similar ground with Indiana Jones and we all know how successful that was.

logan's run (1976)

In the Year 2274, humans live in a large sealed metropolis, where everyone lives a hedonistic lifestyle. Until you turn 30 that is, when a person must report to Carousel, and supposedly be reborn. Those who do not report are pursued and terminated by 'Sandmen'. One such sandman is Logan (Michael York), who derives much joy from his job. Then one day he's given the task of infiltrating and uncovering the underground organisation that helps runners escape. He joins up with Jessica6 (Jenny Agutter) and runs, pursued by his former best friend Francis (Richard Jordan). As he gets further into the underground he begins to question the while basis of his beliefs. Can he find sanctuary and will he betray them if he does?
A 70's perspective on the future, all clean and white and gossamer clothing, but stands the test of time better than most other futuristic sci-fi's of its age. Entertaining. if lightweight film.
