17.7.26

the mighty thor against the queen of the amazons (1963)

AKA Thor and the Amazon Women. Le gladiatrici
"I hope to become part of your glorious army."
A race of Amazon warriors are slavers and hear about the mighty Thor as a great fighter and decide they need him for their gladiator tournaments. Whilest the Amazons search for him the warrior Tamar (Susy Andersen), is having to train as a gladiatorix and is set to fight for her life in the arena. Can the mighty Thor (Joe Robinson) help Tamar and the other captives regain their freedom?
The entire premise doesn't make much sense, why is a matriarchal society killing other women? But then it doesn't make any sense to think to hard about this.

the mighty thor against the queen of the amazons (1963)

AKA Thor and the Amazon Women. Le gladiatrici
"I don't want to go to a country where men are treated like worms."
A race of Amazon warriors are slavers and hear about the mighty Thor as a great fighter and decide they need him for their gladiator tournaments, but is spirted away. Whilest the Amazons search for him the warrior Tamar (Susy Andersen), is having to train as a gladiatorix and is set to fight for her life in the arena. Can the mighty Thor (Joe Robinson) help to them regain their freedom.
Lacks in anything like any form of enterainment...

12.4.20

war gods of babylon (1962)

aka Le sette folgori di Assur. 7th Thunderbolt.
"...you can belong to no one else, not even a God."
Mirra (Jocelyn Lane), has her village destroyed by the Asyrians, killing everyone but her. She is saved when a travelling holyman takes her to the capital. There she catches the eye of Shammash (Luciano Marin), the king's brother, who brings her to live in the palace. Unfortunately King Sardanapalo (Howard Duff), also takes a shine to her, and so the bickering begins.
To say that there are better epics, is not saying a lot.

hercules and the black pirates (1964)

aka Sansone contro il corsaro nero. Hercules vs Black Pirate.
"Good for you Hercules."
Hercules (Sergio Ciani) is engaged in ridding the seas of pirates, but unknown to all, Rodrigo Sanchez (Piero Lulli) is in league with the wicked Black Pirate (Andrea Aureli) and does all he can to frame Hercules.
The long lived Hercules tips up in the 18th C and leads a rip-roaring romp.

hercules against the barbarians (1964)

aka Maciste nell'inferno di Gengis Khan.
"That's what you wanted wasn't it!"
In the 12th century Kubilai (Ken Clark) is defeated trying to take Cracow, by an army led by Hercules (Mark Forest). So Kubukai hatches a plan to find and kidnap the heir to the throne, Armina (José Greci). Can Hercules save her and defeats Khan again?
At this point in the franchise, anything can happen, so why not have Hercules battling the Mongols in Poland, and why not throw in some crocodiles for good measure!!!

5.6.19

the arena (1974)

"Why should women have to fight?"
Women from various countries (including Margaret Markov and Pam Grier), are captured and sent to Rome as slaves, but then find themselves fighting as gladiators. Their only way out is to mount a rebellion fight for their freedom.
Bolting together a women-in-prison film with a peplum, but not it a particularly good way.

warrior queen (1987)

"Save me."
A mysterious queen (Sybil Danning), arrives in ancient Pompeii, and whilst gaining the trust of the city leaders such as Clodius (Donald Pleasence), she is tries helping their slaves, but how long can she get away with it, before they being to notice?
Little in the way of plot or action, makes for a poor entertainment.

deathstalker (1983)

"this just isn't your day is it?"
Deathstalker (Rick Hill) is asked by a deposed king to rescue his daughter from the evil wizard Munkar (Barbi Benton). To do so he has to obtain and unite the three powers of creation, and comes together with some others to do so.
A cut price Conan, with far more sex. From and age when men were men and women were begging for it, (it would seem).

the giants of thessaly (1960)

aka I giganti della Tessaglia.
"Whenever your eyes are flashing with rage, you're even more beautiful."
Thessaly having been invaded by barbarian's, King Jason (Roland Carey) attempts to placate the gods, by searching for the Golden Fleece. Unfortunately whilst away, his scheming nephew, Adrasto (Alberto Farnese), usurps him and the Queen (Ziva Rodann).
Run of the mill Peplum, adding nothing to the Argonaut myth.

16.3.14

the giant of marathon (1959)

aka La battaglia di Maratona.
"You are as beautiful as a statue of a god."
Phillipides (Steve Reeves) is having a good time winning Olympic wreathes and being a hero. But he has to battle politicial intrige whilst falling for Andromeda (Mylène Demongeot), and then Darius invades with his mighty Persian army.
Above average Peplum, that plays fast and loose with the legend.

9.12.13

conquest of mycene (1963)

aka Ercole contro Molock. Hercules vs. the Molloch. Hercules Against Moloch. Hercules Attacks.
"If you love freedom above all else, Glauco loves it more so."
Glauco (Gordon Scott), is a prince to a neighboring empire who goes undercover as Hercules in an attempt to free Mycenae from the corrupt and evil Queen Demetra (Rosalba Neri) and her disfigured son Moloch.
Well made political thriller, with the added attractions of a hunky hero and beautiful princesses and queens.

24.11.13

the ten gladiators (1963)

aka I dieci gladiatori. "Better the innocent are eliminated, then the criminals are left alive." Some hooded men, led by Glaucus Valerius (Roger Browne) try to kill the corrupt Claudius Nero (Gianni Rizzo), but a group of innocent gladiators, inc the Rock (Dan Vadis) are charged with the crime and told they are to be decapitated. Obviously they choose not to accept this arbitary judgement, and plan to escape...
Mixing in the struggle of Christianity into the story of Nero's crazy antics, this is an entertaining adventure of the Saturday matinee variety.

9.8.13

samson in king solomon's mines (1964)

aka Maciste nelle miniere del re Salomone. Maciste in King Solomon's Mines.
"One day you will be king."
Prince Vazma (Loris Loddi), heir to the throne and King Solomon's mines flees his country fearing for his life. Samson (Reg Park) tries to help him, but is captured and forced to work as a slave in the mines. How can Vazma free Samson so he can help fight the usurper.
Reg has the muscles, but apart from that, there is little to recommend this run of the mill adventure.

8.8.13

the adventures of hercules II (1985)

aka Le avventure dell'incredibile Ercole. Hercules II.
"Great deeds make us immortal."
Hercules (Lou Ferrigno) is sent to earth to retrieve the Seven Thunderbolts of Zeus, which have been stolen by some renegade gods. Hercules hooks up with a couple of fiesty types (Milly Carlucci & Sonia Viviani), and they undertake to save the earth.
Cozzi adds some cheesey Sci-fi special effects to the mythical story, with dashes of Clash of the Titans, Star Wars and many other popular films of the previous ten years. Episodic, but not in a good way.

spartacus and the ten gladiators (1964)

aka Spartacus e gli invincibili 10 gladiatori.
"By all the Gods he's crazy."
Fed up with their life in the Roman Colosseum, a band of gladiators escape, and team up with a rebel in the hills; Spartacus (Alfredo Varelli). But Rome is not going to let them live peacefully, and send soldiers get them back.
Run of the mill adventure, offering nothing new to the genre.

28.2.13

hercules and the captive women (1961)

aka Ercole alla conquista di Atlantide. Hercules and the Conquest of Atlantis. Hercules Conquers Atlantis. Hercules and the Haunted Women.
"This is one of those legends."
Hercules (Reg Park) decides to hang up his sandals and settle down, but is drugged by his son (Luciano Marin) and Androcles (Ettore Manni) so they can search for a mysterious country that is threatening Greece. They find it when Hercules rescues Ismene (Laura Efrikian) and she leads them to her mother the Queen of Atlantis (Fay Spain). But instead of thanks they find the Queen plotting to take over the world and kill her daughter.
Hercules again battles monsters and devious women, in an attempt to save the world.

16.10.12

the giant of metropolis (1961)

aka Il gigante di Metropolis.
"you will reign over a wasteland."
Yotar (Roldano Lupi) is trying to usurp power in the advanced civilisation of Metropolis, but is opposed by Princess Mecede (Bella Cortez) and the mighty Obro (Gordon Mitchell) who has come to the city to warn that Metropolis's evil ways will catch up on them all.
A confusing mix of sword and sandal muscle man action, sci-fi brain transplants, with a dash of Atlantis mythology. Add dancing girls, beautiful heroines in bikini's, and you come up with this baffling melange.

20.6.12

Colossus and the amazon queen (1960)

aka La regina delle Amazzon. Colossus and the Amazons.
"Don't forget I was the one who thought up the Trojan horse."
The quick-witted Pirro (Rod Taylor) is tricked along with his friend Glauco (Ed Fury), the strongest of the Greeks, into sailing to an unexplored land. Unfortunately for them, they find themselves sold to the Amazons, and have to figure out a way to get out of their clutches.
Lame buddy comedy adventure, that otherwise hits all the marks for this genre, muscle man hero, not quite beautiful women, and ubiquitous but quite unnecessary dance routine.

30.1.12

hercules in the haunted world (1961)

aka Hercules In The Center Of The Earth.
"I almost wished you had left me here to die."
Hercules (Reg Park) has to decend into Hades to retrieve a stone that will allow him to free Princess Deianira (Leonora Ruffo) from a curse, set by King Lico (Christopher Lee).
Bava gives this installment some added lysergic qualities, that can only up the entertainment value.

21.1.12

achilles (1962)

aka The Fury Of Achilles.
"It is difficult to wash away the odour of death."
As the Trojan War rumbles on tension between Achilles (Gordon Mitchell) and Agamemnon (Mario Petri) divides the Greek camp. Can Hector (Jacques Bergerac) exploit this rift giving the Trojans a chance finally win the war?
Action and psychological drama makes this one of the more interesting Peplum, as Achilles knows that to win the war he needs to kill Hector, and thus seal his own doom.
