don't be afraid of the dark (2010)

"Turn out the light, we want to be friends."
Eight year old, Sally (Bailee Madison), moves into an old mansion, to be with her estranged father (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Katie Holmes). Exploring the house she finds and accidentally releases some ancient and malevolent creatures, who prowl in the dark. As they become bolder and increasingly violent, Sally realises that she has to convince the adults that she is not acting up and monsters do exist.
Remake of an ABC TV horror scripted by Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins. It explores themes del Toro has often played with, of ancient entities and children's access to them. A beautifully enacted and atmospheric fantasy horror, that provides some genuine shocks along the way.

johnny suede (1991)

"Did you ever hear the rent song?"
The story of Johnny Suede (Brad Pitt), not exactly the brightest spark in the world, his attempt to emulate Freak Storm (Nick Cave) and become a rock star. An attempt that is hindered by his tricky love life.
A small film, that inhabits the minutiae of life. The little things that make up most peoples everyday existance. Slow and deliberate pacing either draws you in, or pushes you away.

the crow (1994)

"A guy turns up looking like a mime from hell..."
It's Devil's night in Detroit and Shelly (Sofia Webster) is raped, then her and her fiance Eric (Brandon Lee) are murdered. A year on and Eric is back for revenge on T-Bird (David Patrick Kelly) and his gang. Before moving onto the ultimate crime overlord Top Dollar (Michael Wincott). All this is watched over by local cop Sergeant Albrecht (Ernie Hudson) and Sarah (Rochelle Davis), a child the couple had taken under their wing.
A movie known by most for the death of it's star Brandon Lee on set, mere days from the end of filming. Considered by most as a haunting adaption from its comic roots, and others for its superficial plot, badly written screenplay and one-dimensional characters. Me I don't mind these, its not the worst comic adaption I've seen, the action is directed effectively and it moves along at a fine pace. A gothic masterpiece or a dark nightmare, you take your pick.
