take me high (1973)

"...the best deal of your life"
Tim (Cliff Richard) is a Merchant banker posted to Birmingham in order to put the screws on a failing restaurant, but he soon falls for the owner (Deborah Watling) and plots a way to a few deals and invents the gourmet burger along the way.
Wheeler dealer Cliff, packed full of his songs to soundtrack this nice little romance.

the swinger (1966)

"I'm not a nudie, I'm a writer."
Kelly Olsson (Ann Margaret) is a writer who gets the knockback from Girl-lure magazine, so to prove that she is not as wholesome as they think, she writes a sex-novel. The publishers take the bait, so she then has to live out her heroine's adventures when in a rush of blood she tells the editor (Anthony Franciosa) that it is all true.
Promises more than it delivers, but the journey is full of kitschy fun along the way.

belgica (2016)

"Welcome to your favourite place for depravity."
Brothers, Jo (Stef Aerts) & Frank (Tom Vermeir) are brought together to create a nightclub in a small Belgium town, but the demands it makes of them look to drive them apart...
The great exuberance of the parties are countered by the depression involved in the subsequent hangovers, all soundtracked by Soulwax.

voyage of the rock aliens (1984)

AKA Attack Of The Aliens.
"Nothing ever happens here."
Liking what they have seen on MYTV, aliens land in a small town and head to the local high school in search of rock and roll. There the head alien (Tom Nolan) falls for Dee Dee (Pia Zadora). Unfortunately she already has a boyfriend, Frankie (Craig Sheffer), and he doesn't take lightly to an alien muscling in on his girl.
Rock N Roll High School, meets Killer Klowns...hoaky and amateurish fun.

babylon (1980)

"Good for nothing filth!"
Blue (Brinsley Forde) is an mc for a reggae system in Brixton, whose life unravels, as he tries to hold it together in the face of racism and poverty.
Low budget and gritty drama shines a light on the rage that would explode the year after in the Brixton riots.

let's go crazy (1951)

"At least the film will have a happy ending."
A short feature set in a nightclub in order to feature a number of variety acts and comedy sketches written by and featuring multiple appearances of Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan.
Unfortunately this manages to showcase all that was unfunny in British music-hall at the time, only enlivened by spotting the various appearances of Sellers.

doctor, you've got to be kidding (1967)

"I'm trying to knock the stuffing out of a stuffed shirt."
Heather (Sandra Dee) has a stage mother (Celeste Holm) who pushes her to be the lead singer in a band. Her boss, Harlan (George Hamilton), is the one man who seems not to like her, and thinks she has an average voice. So obviously he is the one man she wants to impress.
Full of retro charm, but little else.

we are the best (2013)

aka Vi är bäst!.
"We are best!"
Two 12 year old girls (Mira Barkhammar & Mira Grosin) bond over their love of punk music and decide to form a band, ignoring the fact that they cannot play, and have no instruments. Then they hit on the idea or involving another girl (Liv LeMoyne) who is shunned by everyone for being Christian, but she has one thing they don't have, a guitar and the ability to play it.
Fine slice of life drama.

yesterday's hero (1979)

"Nice work if you can get it."
Rod Turner (Ian McShane) is an over the hill and alcoholic football, but he wants one last crack at stardom. He finds help from ex-girlfriend Cloudy Martin (Suzanne Somers), a pop star who pursuades her partner Clint Simon (Paul Nicholas) to place him with his team.
Never able to develop the dramatic possibilities to make it beyond a typical b-movie.

wild rebels (1967)

"Whats going on?"
Stock car driver, Rod Tillman (Steve Alaimo), gives up on racing and hooks up with biker gang the Satans Angels. The trouble is that their income is gained by robbing banks and Rod decides to go undercover for the cops.
A dated attempt at jumping the mc gang genre, with a few musical numbers thrown in to liven things up.

riot on sunset strip (1967)

"So we begin another jolly evening in kiddy land."
Andy (Mimsy Farmer) is 17 and at college, when she starts hanging with an unruly bunch getting their kicks in the clubs of Sunset Strip. This brings her into conflict with the police for curfew violations, and thus her estranged father, the local police chief (Aldo Ray), who is under pressure to crack down on these 'longhairs'.
Run of the mill melodrama, wrapped up like an exploitation classic. Mind you it does feature the Chocolate Watch Band, the Standells,

hell on wheels (1967)

"we have to live our lives as we think we should."
Brothers, Marty (Marty Robins) and Del (John Ashley) are a nascar driver and a brilliant mechanic. Together they make a winning team, but they fall out as Del decides he wants some of the adulation and becomes a driver himself. Meanwhile the feds are trying to rid the area of moonshine, and the track manager plans to use some of the drivers to run his illicit hooch.
Marty Robbins, successful country and western singer and racer plays a version of himself in this run of the mill thriller, padded out with far too much racing footage.

the cookoo partrol (1967)

"I knew you could do it."
Freddie Garrity and his dreamers play a troop of scouts tasked by scout leader Wick (Kenneth Connor) with transporting some camping equipment, but along the way meet some burglars and eventually get the better of them.
A comedy of very limited appeal.

cavalcade of variety (1941)

"Hold me back!"
A ventriloquist fronts this variety show that mixes song, dance sketch comedy, from the age when variety was king.
A mixed bag thrown together.

randle and all that (1946)

"Well I'll follow you."
Variety show, presenting on stage song and dance, comedy acrobats and comedians, including Frank Randle playing an elderly shoe repairer.
At least its blissfully short.

northern soul (2014)

"No prisoners tonight."
It's 1974 ad John (Elliot James Langridge) is a lonely kid, who finds a friend in Stee (Alex Esmail), who loves Northern Soul, and his enthusiasm draws John into the culture and music.
A story that sticks to the template of loner finds friends and learns from tragedy, but is driven along by the obvious enthusiasm for the music.

soulboy (2010)

aka Souled Out.
"Why would I stop you?"
Joe (Martin Compston) becomes fixated on Jane (Nichola Burley), who loves soul. So to impress her he starts to frequent and get into the scene. Thankfully Mandy (Felicity Jones) is there to help him get the basic moves down and what to listen to.
Boy meets girl, and takes time to realise that he's fixated on the wrong girl for him. A standard formula, but played well, with touches of comedy and pathos. This lacks the feel and detail for the scene that Elaine Constantine's film does, but has more of a feel good factor about it.

beach ball (1965)

"My board!"
The Wigglers are a bunch of surfer dudes, who have to dig up some bread to pay for their musically instruments before they get repossessed by Mr Wolf (James Wellman). Songwritter and leader of the gang, Dick (Edd Byrnes), comes up with the idea of conning the money out of the college, but the four girls running the loans system instead decide to make the boys their pet project and get them back to school.
A breezy, if slow witted, beach comedy, that forutunately has a nice sideline in bands such as The Righteous Brothers, The Walker Brothers, The Hondells and The Supreme's.

the decline of western civilisation (1981)

"it's like raw again and it's for real..."
Documentary taking a look at the Los Angeles punk music scene in 1980, featuring inciteful comments from its fans and concert footage of bands including Black Flag, Catholic Discipline, Circle Jerks, Fear, Germs, and X.
Effectively captures the audiences, as much as the bands, making up the LA hardcore scene of the time.

Mondo style documentary with Amanda Lear as your tour guide, showing the hottest places to go at night in every mayor city around the world, from Las Vegas, Tokyo, to Paris. Each in turn dissolves into various sexual activities.
The only reason to watch this is for Amanda Lears songs, and they aren't even that good!
