Small time thug Pinkie (Richard Attenborough) kills an associate who owes him money disguised as suicide. Unfortunately for Pinkie, the murder may be revealed if young waitress, Rose (Carol Marsh), realises she has a vital piece of information for the police. So Pinkie decides to get close to the girl to cover his tracks, but as the law, and amateur detective Ida (Hermione Baddeley) close in, Pinkie's gang get nervous and Pinkie gets ever more violent...
Classic drama, based on a classic novel by Graham Greene. A tense thriller, with a poetic ending, wrapped around thoughts of Catholic guilt and redemption.
