the amityville horror (1979)

Newlywed (James Brolin) and (Margot Kidder) find their perfect house, and at a great price, Unfortunately the great price is as it had been the location of a mass murder, and soon the family start experiencing bizarre events, that even the local priest (Rod Steiger) cannot stop!
A fine supernatural thriller.

altered states (1980)

"How do we stop this?"
Respected scientist Eddie Jessop (William Hurt) revives an old experiment, and using himself as guinea pig finds himself regressing...
With Russell on board you know the kitchen sink would be thrown at this body horror, with a liberal dose of sprituality and psychoanalysis.

But unknown to him, in her downtime, she is learning karate and shooting, life skills that come in handy when she eventually takes revenge.
Lindberg exhibits a fragility, that turns feral after her abuse, allowing this slight and unevenly paced film some life. And whatever your thoughts on the film, she looks mighty cool in her leather coat and eye patch.

12.11.23

diva (1981)

"My satori is this: Zen in the art of buttering bread!"
Mailman Jules (Frédéric Andréi) loves opera and his obsession with the diva Cynthia Hawkins (Wilhelmenia Fernandez) leads him into trouble when he records her in concert, and a mix up with an incriminating tape on a corrupt police chief, leads to further trouble.

Underated gothic horror.

Unknown to everyone the body is released to some unethical scientists, who create a killing machine with the ability to self heal.
Generally entertaining thriller, where Norris gets to flex his martial arts skills, but erratic pacing takes some of the fun out of it.

the gamma people (1956)

"You'll get me into trouble."
A pair of reporters (Paul Douglas and Leslie Phillips) are accidentally stranded in the small dictatorship of Gudavia. Where the local ruler is experimenting with gamma rays to create geniuses, but has the unerring habit of transforming some of his subjects into mutated henchmen.
A bizzare sci-fi, that doesn't catch the imagination.

"I say try it!"

A low budget but entertaining piece of fiction.

the hangman waits (1947)

"Morning papers!"
Follows a Scotland Yard Inspector (John Turnbull) as he attempts to capture a killer of several grisly murders.
The semi-documentary style adds level of interest, as we get to see bomb-damaged London in and around Fleet Street, and see if you can spot an uncredited John Le Mesurier.

A serial killer is murdering young women and Inspector Peter Lawton (Dennis Price) begins to suspect his sister Joan (Peggy Evans) is dating the killer, as Teddy (Philip Saville) seems to know too much about the case.
A quirky thriller not helped by the over melodramaic organ soundtrack.

not tonight darling (1971)

"Night then darling."
Frustrated housewife Karen (Luan Peters) is seduced by Alex (Vincent Bell) and drawn into his world of swinging, before Karen's world comes crashing down when her husband finds out that she's been doing.
Interesting only as a curio of the time, when the British sex comedy was trying to keep up with the liberalisaton happening elsewhere. The best thing about this is the Thunderclap Newman interlude, which should tell you everything you need to know about this film!

squirm (1976)

"It was the worms!"
New Yorker Mick (Don Scardino) comes to visit rural Fly Creek and his friend Geri (Patricia Pearcy). Unfortunately he does so after a violent storm that has brought down the local powerlines, and unknown to the populaton, this has drawn out millions of angry earth worms, who have a taste for blood!

After ten years of hard labour, Gary Hamilton (Klaus Kinski), is pardoned, and only has one thing on his mind...revenge, on the people who framed him. His partner Acombar (Peter Carsten), and his girlfriend, Maria (Marcella Michelangeli).

Reminiscent of Arsenic and Old Lace, both Lorre and Karloff give it their all, but it doesn't quite match up to the screwball antics of the later picture.

26.2.23

A fluid psychological horror, as Cathryn moves from reality to nightmare.

hammerhead (1968)

"Good luck to you Hood, I think you are going to need it."
Charles Hood (Vince Edwards) is recruited by British Intelligence to get close to international crime boss Hammerhead (Peter Vaughan), who is suspected to be trying to steal NATO defense secrets. If that wasn't complicated enough, model Sue Trenton (Judy Geeson) has taken a shine to Hood, and trails him wherever he goes.
A swinging London riff on James Bond, with a distinctly one dimentional central character that doesn't quite hit the mark.

unpublished story (1942)

Are they Nazi sympathizers, or could they have been infiltrated by Nazi fifth columnists.
An interesting propaganda piece attacking defeatism in the midst of war, with a nice sideline in slice of life during the blitz.

Atmospheric road movie thriller, that loses its way after a while.

A camp classic due to the plot and fashions, and a supposed favorite of John Waters, with Sarli acting as part inspiration for Divines look.

"Just when the conversation was getting interesting."
