Roger Adams (Cary Grant) is a newspaper journalist, who falls for and spontaneously marries Julie Gardiner (Irene Dunne) just as he gets his big break and moves to Japan. The couple reunite in Tokyo, and just as Julie is about to announce she is pregnant, the region is hit by an earthquake, resulting in a miscarriage.
