curse of the devil (1973)

aka El retorno de Walpurgis. The Return of Walpurgis. The Black Harvest of Countess Dracula. Return of the Werewolf.
"Take this sacred skull and continue his damnation."
When a medieval knight breaks up a satanist coven, its leader curses his descendants. Forward four centuries and the inquisitors descendant, Waldemar Daninsky (Paul Naschy), is in shock having accidentally shot a gypsy whilst on a wolf hunt. The gypsies take none to kindly to this, and set about enacting the curse by sending the mysterious Ilona (Ines Morales) to start his downfall.
Romantic thriller, plays out in a coherent manner, something that cannot be said for some others in the Naschy canon.

john carpenter's vampires (1998)

aka Vampires. "For 600 years I have fed on your kind at will."
A vampire slayer (James Woods) has most of his team trashed by Valek (Thomas Ian Griffith), a particularly nasty vampire. With long term sidekick Montoya (Daniel Baldwin) and recently bitten Katrina (Sheryl Lee) along for the ride, he has to find and protect an ancient religious relic, the black cross. Why? Because Valek has found out that should he acquire it then he will be able to walk in the day.
Enjoyable romp, despite the annoyingly huge plot holes.

fright night 2 (1988)

"1, there are no Vampires. 2, thre is a rational explaination for this..."
After three years of therapy, Charley (William Ragsdale) has come to believe that vampire's don't exist. To finally rid himself of his ghosts he plucks up the courage to meet Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall) again, and brings his new girlfriend, (Traci Lind), along for support. Unfortunately for Charley vampires do exist, and they are out for revenge.
Continuing the theme, but with added comedy, and gore.

fright night (1985)

"He's a VAMPIRE!"
What happens when teenager Charley Brewster (William Ragsdale) finds out that his new next door neighbour Jerry Dandrige (Chris Sarandon) is a vampire? Having drawn a blank with his family and friends, he turns to Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), a ham actor and the host of Fright Night, Charlies favourite TV show. Will believe him?
Lighthearted horror, that makes for a fine late night frightfest.

assignment terror (1970)

aka Los monstruos del terror. Dracula Vs. Frankenstein. Operation Terror. The Man Who Came from Ummo. Dracula Versus Frankenstein.
"Our superior minds must always be in control."
Aliens bring two scientists (Michael Rennie and Karin Dor) back from the dead, so they can re-animate various monsters, including a werewolf, Frankenstein's monster, a mummy, and a vampire.
Written and starring Paul Naschy, so you know that a werewolf can't be far away in this convoluted tale, featuring every horror monster you can think of.

charlie chan in the chinese ring (1947)

aka The Chinese Ring.
"A interesting situation."
A Chinese woman is murdered in Charlie Chan's (Roland Winters) house, so naturally his interest is peaked as to why she wanted to see him, and who would want her dead. Enter No.2 son (Victor Sen Yung) to klutz it up and Birmingham (Mantan Moreland) to clown around.
One of the lesser Chan movies, as it lacks any sort of mystery, and seems to play out by the numbers.

maniac cop 3: badge of silence (1993)

aka Badge of Silence: Maniac Cop III. MC3: Maniac Cop 3.
"Your spirit will never be at rest will it, Officer Cordell."
Cordell (Robert Z'Dar) is back, pursuing a case of injustice. Officer Katie Sullivan (Gretchen Becker), is involved in a shoot out and ends up braindead, accused of police brutality, and Cordell takes up her case. Det. Sean McKinney (Robert Davi) isn't so happy to hear about Cordell's return to the beat, or his interest in Sullivan.
Entertaining slasher/actioner, that is a solid sequel.

sisters of death (1976)

aka Death Trap. Death time House.
"Smart chick."
An initiation into a sorority goes wrong, when one of the initiates dies. Seven years later those involved come together again, at what turns out to be the estate of the father of the dead girl...
The sort of film where young and dumb women do things like take showers or nosy around empty parts of a house, when they know a serial killer is stalking them. In other words, infuriating!

maniac cop 2 (1990)

"It was one of you."
Following their tussle with the maniac cop Matt Cordell (Robert Z'Dar), Jack Forest (Bruce Campbell) and Terry Mallory (Laurene Landon) are sent to Susan Riley (Claudia Christian) for clinical evaluation. But they soon meet up with Cordell again, and it doesn't end well for Forest and Mallory. So it's up to Riley and Det. Sean McKinney (Robert Davi), to track the maniac down.
Round two racks up the action, and the sleaze, and whilst still a good horror, it lacks the charm of the first.

maniac cop (1988)

"It was a cop man, a big cop."
A serial killer is dressing as a cop. As New York descends into fear, Frank McCrae (Tom Atkins) is given the task of stopping him, and they think they've found their man in the shape of young cop, Jack Forrest (Bruce Campbell). What they don't know is that he's been set-up. It's up to Forrest, his girlfriend Theresa (Laurene Landon), and McCrae to crack the case before the Maniac Cop strikes again.
A film that belies its low budget origins to provide a fine horror.

adam and eve vs cannibals (1983)

aka Adam And Eve. Blue Paradise. Adam and Eve: The First Love Story. Adam and Eve: The First Love Story.
"But I don't want to!"
Takes Hammer's One Million Years BC and applies it to the Adam and Eve story. Eve (Andrea Goldman) tempts Adam (Mark Gregory), to eat of the forbidden fruit, and both are cast out of paradise. Now in the real world, they walk a desert like earth, and come across many fearsome creatures, but none more so than a cannibal tribe.
Soporific and annoying take on the biblical tale, where Eve spends most of her time in a huff, walking off, or stamping her foot when she doesn't get what she wants.

cavegirl (1985)

"Not the most fun I've had, but it's close."
Nerd Rex (Daniel Roebuck), the butt of all the jokes at school, accidentally gets catapulted back in time, whilst on a field trip. There he finds the attractive Eba (Cynthia Thompson) and her tribe. Can he get inside her fur bikini or find his way back to his own time?
What starts as the ultimate, as in annoying, frat-boy comedy, actually turns into something almost charming once Rex goes back in time.

embrace of the vampire (2013)

"...or is he talking about the monster himself? The creature of the night who wishes for a moment, however slight, to be human again."
Orphan Charlotte (Sharon Hinnendael) arrives at university, not knowing that an ancient evil has followed her there, plaguing her dreams. But that is not the worst of it, she could be being stalked by a vampire.
Initial promise, soon turns to frustration, as the story seems to go nowhere slowly!

the viking sagas (1995)

"You must never kill twice in the same family, or you will not live long."
When Ketil (Hinrik Ólafsson) kills his father, Kjartan (Ralf Moeller) has to escape to Iceland, and try to learn how to be a warrior, but the man Kjartan has been told to find (Sven-Ole Thorsen) does not want to teach him. Will he be able to survive long enough to exact his revenge?
Coming across as a more serious Arnie, Moeller unfortunately is called to carry this uninvolving production, and finds he can't.

dracula the dark prince (2013)

aka The Dark Prince.
"I would tear the world apart for you."
Dracula (Luke Roberts), renounces God when his bride is killed by an order of military monks. From here in he searches for the lightbringer, currently protected by Alina (Kelly Wenham), who is trying to deliver it to Leonardo Van Helsing (Jon Voight). But she is captured by Dracula, who sees that she resembles his murdered wife.
A confusing mix of biblical references, Lord of the Rings type creatures, and paper thin characters, which produces an unfulfilling action horror.
