the haunted palace (1963)

"From this night onward you shall bear my curse."
Charles Dexter Ward (Vincent Price) inherits a house in a small village. He soon learns the village lives under his great grandfather's curse, and he soon starts to come under his Great grandfather's influence...
Price gives another of his stage ripping performances, in this somber gothic horror, full of the stylised atmosphere we've come to expect from Corman.

the black torment (1964)

aka Estate of Insanity.
"There's some say you've never been gone."
Sir Richard (John Turner) arrives back at his ancestral seat with a new wife in tow (Heather Sears), after three months in London. But rumours abound that he had secretly returned a month previously and committed murder. Can these rumours have anything to do with the death of his first wife and where are they coming from?
A well made 60's gothic horror, in grand Hammer horror style.

the dark castle (1952)

aka The Black Castle.
"They kill without emotion, I kill with my heart."
Sir Ronald Burton (Richard Greene) heads to the Black Forest, in search of two missing friends. He suspects Count Bruno (Stephen McNally), is responsible, and is determined to find out if his suspicions are true.
A well told gothic horror enlivened by cameo's from Lon Chaney, Jr, and Boris Karloff. My only problem is it is far too light - the black forest suggests dark foreboding, what we get is a well lit Hollywood back lot.

west end jungle (1964)

"The streets of London have been swept aparantly clean, but the dirt still remains out of sight."
A documentary delving into the bleak underworld of the Soho sex trade of prositutes and clip joints.
A tame expose, that works more as a slice of life than an investigation or titilation.

the long hair of death (1964)

aka I lunghi capelli della morte.
"Evil shall stalk you by night..."
Medieval Europe and a woman is burnt to death, following accusations of witchcraft. Her eldest daughter (Barbara Steele) appeals to Count Humboldt (Giuliano Raffaelli) to stop this miscarrage, but he seduces then kills her. Now the youngest daughter, with no family to look after her, is taken in by Humboldt, and when of age marries the Count's son. Then a mystery woman arrives, the spitting image of the elder daughter...
An atmospheric, though slow, little horror.

to let (2006)

aka Para entrar a vivir.
"Where are we?"
Mario (Adrià Collado) and Clara (Macarena Gómez) need to find a new apartment quickly, and when Mario sees an advert for what seems the ideal flat, and at a wonderful price, he quickly arranges a viewing...
Tense thriller of a film, that draws you in quickly and effectively.

dr jekyll and mrs hyde (1995)

"What! She's smoking! God Damn it, with my lungs."
Dr Jacks (Tim Daly) is a chemist who develops perfumes, frustrated as his lack of achievement. Then he inherits his great grand-father's lab books and finds out he was the real Dr Jekyll. So he decides to continue his ancestors experiments, with unforseen consequences...turning into Mrs Hyde (Sean Young). There then follows a battle of minds. Who will win out, Jacks or Hyde?
A updated and comic version of Hammer's Dr Jekyll and sister Hyde. Producing a so-so comedy, but nothing more.
