ichi the killer (2001)

aka Koroshiya 1
"weren't you going to rid the world of all bullies?"
A Yakuza boss is killed and a large amount of money disappears with his body. His Lieutenant, Kakihara (Tadanobu Asano), believes him to have been kidnapped and sets about trying to find him. But his overly violent methods only incur the wrath of the other yakuza bosses, and they expell the gang from the syndicate. Meanwhile the search leads them to the mysterious Ichi (Nao Ômori), a psychopathic killer controlled by a retired cop Jijii (Shinya Tsukamoto).
An inventive bit of cinema, based on a popular manga series, that is disturbing and gory. Don't expect to understand it, just go with the flow, and watch this almost surrealist tale of revenge and sadomasochism.

  1. I've had this one in my Netflix queue for a while now, I'll have to check it out. Your description makes it sound a lot more interesting.

  2. Definitely interesting and worth a look if you have a strong stomach. Miike's film's are always worth a look, and this is one of those where everything but the kitchen sink is thrown in.
